Project 3- Nature

Nature... it's all around us and is part of our lives. Nature can be interpreted in many different ways, so for this project I decided to interpret the concept of nature with sand. This is based off of the sand mandalas and aboriginal art, but with a bit of my own touch.

These are the following materials I needed for this project:

-play sand
-colored sand
-shadowboxes
-filter tubes
-plastic bag
-paper towel (I probably don't have to use this, could've used something else)

I ended up making three pieces, however, my methods for doing each was a little different. For the first piece I used a nail to set my design and draw some borders, there was a bit of trial and error.

For the second piece, I decided to use my hands instead, since the nail wasn't really working for me, this also felt a bit more natural.

For the third piece, I didn't really set up a design. I was a bit curious, so I mixed in the colored sand with the play sand; which resulted in this image below. Afterwards, I just want with what I felt like adding into the now colored canvas below.

Eventually, I decided to make a small sand art piece and was at the time trying to do something with it at first... but it didn't work out. I got a little frustrated and was erasing the mistake, that was until I made an imprint of my hand. After that I decided to fill in the imprint, and add in a small design to the piece.

These were the final results, despite the project being over I'll probably continue doing this as a hobby.

Project 2- Mapping

For this project, I was a bit stuck... as in I had no clue in which direction (ha... direction=maps) I wanted to go for this project. Eventually, it came down to two ideas one involving sound and the other involving colors; I also wanted to incorporate emotions to my project so the one involving colors seemed more ideal. This would include watercolor, markers, and magazine pieces...I mostly had Rolling Stones.
I first started off with watercolor and colored nine watercolor papers. Each piece had one color.

I original wanted each to look similar, however, I suppose I got bored after first two pieces and began to 'play' with my other pieces. Then I applied the markers and randomly added marks to each piece, sort of like a fictional map.

Unfortunately, I didn't add in the magazine pieces... so this is what I ended up with, for the moment.

Project #1: Language

Language is the focus for this project and it could refer to many things from simple words to art to performance and sound.

However, for this project I figured I'd stick with 'books'...a bit cliché but the way I pictured my project; was that words would be flowing out of the books much like how words flow from our mouths. This would symbolize the action of communication and history. At first I thought of placing the books on the ground and covering them in paint and just sprinkle in the words and letters, but instead I decided to hang the books up.

Then I later thought why not make a "Word Tent" instead and this was how I pictured it'd look.
I would require the following materials:
- 4 wooden book boxes
- 2 3yd white bubble fabric sheets
- various assortments of letters, words, characters, and symbols
- wires
- strings
- string lights
- screws and braces

From there, I started to cut holes on one side of my wooden books, and there I then connection the books with braces. Connecting them by the edge of their frames and forming them into a diamond shape.
Next I thought of adding in the 2 3yd fabric and have them cross each other in a 'X', by draping them over the wooden books and have them weave in and out from the hole. I would then attach the letters and words to the fabrics and finally add in the string lights.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the string lights and will have to make due with the natural lighting in the art room.

Afterwards, I probably finish the project and use the 'Word Chandelier' as a personal decoration for myself.
